Description |
Original watercolor painting of a group of people gathered around a fire, 'remembering All.' REMEMBERING ALL Hoosier Salon 1957 Ruth K. Hibbs (1893-1981) Watercolor, 14 X 16 |
Provenance |
Purchased from the Hoosier Salon in 1957. The painting has its setting in Guatemala. The Mayan Indians are pictured in their native way of worship and, at this particular church in Chalatenango, visitors can enter only by a side door and are not permitted to take pictures. Even sketching by the artist was resented, so she made many visits to collect enough memories to carry back to the easel. Hibbs was born near Franklin and was a member of Franklin Zeta Chapter of Tri Kappa. She lived for 30 years in Chicago. In 1955 she returned to the Hoosier Homestead Farms, just outside Franklin, where she had lived as a child. A graduate of Franklin College, she received her fine art training at John Herron Art Institute, Art Institute of Chicago and Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. She was interested in oil and watercolor media as well as ceramics and wood carving. |
