Description |
Kitagawa Utamaro ( 1754-1806). " Woman with Biidoro " from " Ten Physiognomic Aspects of Women" A girl with her hair dressed in the shimada style and clad in a kimono of checker pattern, is playing with a glass toy called poppin. Ukiyo-e artists were always alert to new fashions of the times, and introduced them into their designs to answer curiosity of the populace. This print is one such example. Utamaro created a new style of bijin-ga ( pictures of feminine beauty ) termed okubi-e ( half-length portraits ) to emphasize women's faces. The bijin ( beautiful women ) whom he depicted were what he always had in mind as the ideal types of feminine charm. ---- Tokyo National Museum |
