CATHEDRAL ARCH - Stephen Polomchak - - Purchased 1965 - $150.00
Steve Polomchak is a native of Gary, Indiana. He became seriously interested in the fine arts after serving in the beautiful South Pacific as a Naval Lt. (J.G.) in World War II. Mr. Polomchak attended Michigan State University and the Chicago Art Institute. He then entered the outdoor advertising field as a commercial sign painter. Most of his spare moments were spent in trying to develop his style. He studied oils under Charles Untulas, watercolors under Irving Schapira, and attended the Ray School of Design. He is married and the father of three children.
Mr. Polomchak did not enter juried competitions until 1961 but since then has won many prizes in many shows: At the 1965 Hoosier Salon the Tri Kappa Purchase Prize for this picture plus DePauw University Purchase Prize for "Shrimp Boat" in watercolor and 3rd prize for "Shrimp Boat" in the watercolors - any subject category.
As to "Cathedral Arch," his wife noticed one of his many sketches in his workshop and prevailed upon him to develop the arch theme contained in his sketch. Within five hours Mr. Polomchak had completed the painting which eventually made its way to the Tri Kappa collection.
